In 2011, Riksbyggen devised Positive Footprint Housing®, Sweden’s most innovative residential and urban development project, in partnership with the Johanneberg Science Park, City of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology, among others. Based on insights gained from the project, a series of housing projects are now under way.

Sustainability is central in all Riksbyggen’s developments and the research conducted in the Positive Footprint Housing® project contributes with insights to be implemented in a larger scale in the production of new housing.

The first of its kind - Viva cooperative building society in Guldheden, Gothenburg – will be completed in 2019. Boasting 132 new flats, the brand new residential area will generate a surplus regarding people, animals and nature. With a more compact building envelope, thicker insulation, solar cell installation for internal generation of electricity, different forms of energy storage, geothermal heating, district heating and ventilation system with heat recovery – in combination with the design and configuration of the buildings – Viva will achieve minimal energy wastage.

Viva means “to live” and is intended to reflect what it’s like to live here. As part of the integrated concept, considerable time has also been invested in designing courtyards, infrastructure, various types of vehicle pools, facilities and communal spaces. In view of the extensive provision of large communal spaces, Viva’s flats are slightly smaller than usual. Examples include the post and delivery room, the recycling room where residents can exchange items with each other, the bicycle garage and workshop, living space, the orangery, greenhouse, teleworking areas, multi-sport court and, not least, all the green space located between the buildings. Viva’s 132 flats will be ready for its residents in 2019.
